Knowing my grandma for my whole life, I was surprised at how little I knew about her childhood and growing up. I knew that she had faced terrible things during and after the war but I just left it at that. It was something I never really thought of talking to her but I am glad I did. I learned many things that I never knew and it was better information than the kind you get in a textbook. I couldn't imagine all of these things happening to my grandma- she was so young. When she got to the United States she was only 14 which is how old I am now.
The things that my grandmother has experienced will always be in her memory forever and will be hard for her to think about. She had to live through a difficult time and had to endure many things at a young age causing her to mature quickly. Although education was very important to the family, she had to work so that her family could eat. Each story of someone who immigrated to the United States after World War II is different, and my grandma's story is just as unique as the next persons.
